Accommodation

If you are organising accommodation for a large group break, this is the page that will tell you many of the details you need.

Chelwood House is approximately 9 miles West of Bath, and the same distance South of Bristol. It was built in the valley of the river Chew in 1681 as a Dower House, and sits in lovely 1.3 acre gardens. The property is grade 2 listed, it has many quaint features and luxurious accommodation. See the ‘Contact Us’ page for a map and directions.

We regularly take large groups for weekends, or for a longer holiday. Typical groups are of 18– 24 people, with a maximum of 27 in the main house. Family gatherings, hen and stag groups are all welcome. Chelwood House is a no smoking zone, except for the function room.

Blue RoomThere are 9 bedrooms in the main house, each with ensuite bathroom or shower-room. (A further 3 ensuite bedrooms each with king-sized beds is optionally available in the Chelwood Annex, making an overall maximum number of 33.)

A superior lounge, the Blue Room, just off the grand entrance hall gives the visitor a calm and elegant lounge space, while the function room down a short passageway offers large groups space for all manner of celebration, feasting, dancing, karaoke, and whatever merriment you care to organise.

Please see the Gallery for pictures of all parts of the house.

The 9 bedrooms have a total of 21 beds, of which 4 are king sized and 17 are single, giving 25 bedspaces. In addition, 2 fold-away beds can be supplied to give a maximum occupancy of 27. The bedrooms are generously sized, comfortably furnished, nicely decorated, and they provide super views over rolling green Mendip countryside both to the front and to the rear of the House.

HallRising up from the hall, the ancient oak staircase with 17th century galleried landing gives access to the first floor. This floor has four bedrooms. One bedroom has 2 single beds, one has a king-sized bed and a single bed, and the other 2 bedrooms each have a beautiful four-poster king sized bed, one with an additional single bed. All these rooms have superb ensuite bathrooms with a bath and shower over, and each bedroom is large enough to take one or more of the foldaway beds if required.

Another staircase leads to a set of five charming bedrooms on the second floor. The three bedrooms on the front side each have 3 single beds and one of them also contains a set of bunk beds. The other two bedrooms on this floor look out over fields to the rear, one having 2 single beds and one a king-sized bed. Again, all five rooms have ensuite facilities.

Function RoomOn the ground floor is the function room, which is huge (6m by 9m). This room is a classical dining room with an oak floor and oak dining tables and chairs to seat well in excess of 30 diners, When required, the furniture can be moved to make room for a party afterwards. Double doors lead from the function room into the games room. Please see our Activities Page for more on this

Your booking will be self catering, and you will have access to the large and well equipped kitchen on the ground floor next to the function room. This kitchen is farmhouse style with wooden units, stone floor and oak table and chairs, and it has a superb old-fashioned pantry off. There is a cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, and dishwasher. You will also find sufficient cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, and wine glasses. Many groups like the extra luxury of booking in outside caterers to do a special meal. We have a list of local contacts that we can send to help you find caterers and the list also has taxi numbers, activity ideas and more.

Terms & Conditions

Liability
You are free to enter into contracts with third parties (caterers, entertainers etc), but as owners we should be informed, and we reserve the right to refuse permission if we consider an arrangement to be unsuitable. You will be required to pay for any damages caused in whatever way by members of your group, or by others whom you have allowed onto the property. To enjoy the high degree of freedom under these arrangements a high degree of care is expected in return, including over security, locking the external doors, etc, and your liability extends to negligence.

Supervision
The owner or a member of his staff will be available at all times during your stay to offer assistance. You will be afforded a reasonable level of privacy, but the condition of the property will be checked at intervals throughout your stay. A cottage adjacent to the main house is used as owners’ accommodation. Please note that if you like a loud party that is fine, but speakers placed by windows or outside and booming across the valley are a no no.

Guide Price
Prices are often in the range £25 - £35 per person per night for a 3-night midweek reservation, varying with group size and season. At weekends the range is more typically £45 - £75 pppn. A cash security of £300 on arrival is also required. A deposit is required before a booking will be confirmed. A payment schedule will be given to you on booking, and failure to follow it will be deemed as cancellation. We take Visa Debit, Switch, and most major cards, and payment can be made over the telephone.

Cancellation
If for whatever reason you decide not to take up the accommodation after it has been booked, let us know straightaway. We will then try to re let to another group, and to the extent that we are successful in rebooking the relevant days cancelled, we will refund to you monies received from you in respect of those days, save for an administration charge. If we are not successful in re-letting, then we keep all money that we have received from you.

Accuracy
We try to keep information on the website and in correspondence up to date, but mistakes can occur inadvertently. Also, room alterations or other works might take place in between booking and arrival, and any person making a booking should be aware that details might change.

We hope you like what you see & have a superb time at Chelwood House.
